A week after the devastating Paris terror attacks, perpetrated by the Islamic State, the UN Security Council has approved a resolution sponsored by France, the UN Security Council, which calls on all nations to unite in the fight against the IS. The resolution, which was passed unanimously on November 20, stressed on the need for decisive action against the “unprecedented threat” of The Islamic State by “all means” necessary.
The UN resolution against IS comes exactly one week after militants launched coordinated gun and bomb attacks in Paris, killing 130 people. Aiming to prevent further attacks by the terror group, the UNSC members agreed to coordinate efforts in combating the group. The resolution singled out the IS as “a global and unprecedented threat to international peace and security”.
After the resolution was passed, France’s ambassador to the UN François Delattre said: “The resolution “is short, strong, and focused on one primary goal: the fight against the common enemy, Daesh [Isis]. We intend to work with all our Security Council partners to achieve a swift adoption of this project, around which we hope the international community will come together.”
“This is an important moment. Today, the world has united against ISIL. The international community has come together and has resolved to defeat this evil, which threatens people of every country and every religion. The United Nations Security Council has unanimously backed action against this evil death cult in both Syria and Iraq,” said Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron. “It has also reiterated its determination to secure a political solution to the conflict in Syria. Today’s vote shows beyond doubt the breadth of international support for doing more in Syria and for decisive action to eradicate ISIL. Britain will continue to support our allies who are fighting ISIL in Syria,” he said.
The recent atrocities committed by IS, including the Paris attacks and the downing of the Russian passenger jet over the Sinai Peninsula, has united the Security Council which has often been divided over other security issues. The attacks on France, Turkey and Mali have pushed the international community closer to combat IS and other kindled Islamist militant organizations.
