The world is getting ready to do business with the newly-elected regime in New Delhi, with Britain promptly conveying congratulations to India’s Prime Minister-elect Narendra Modi and voicing hope that India and the UK will forge closer partnership in the days to come.
“I congratulate Narendra Modi and the BJP on their success and look forward to forging an even closer partnership with India in the months ahead,” British Foreign Minister William Hague said in a message May 16, barely minutes after the BJP won a landslide victory in the parliamentary elections.
“The UK has strong ties with India and the British Government looks forward to working with the new Indian Government to build on this relationship and deliver security, growth and prosperity for both our nations,” he said.
“With 815 million eligible voters, 915,000 polling stations, and nine days of voting over five weeks, India has seen the largest parliamentary election in the world.”
Many European countries, including Britain, ostracised Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, for his alleged role in the 2000 anti-Muslim riots. However, with Modi emerging as a prime ministerial candidate of the BJP, India’s chief opposition party last year, the Western countries began a process of rapprochement with the man who is now going to be the prime minister of India.
