France’s President Francois Hollande has joined world leaders in felicitating India’s prime minister-elect Narendra Modi and hoped for bolstering multi-faceted strategic partnership between the two countries.
In his congratulatory message, the French president lauded India on the outstanding conduct of the Indian general elections- a colossal exercise spanning five weeks, and said that the very high turnout at the polls has shown “the exceptional vitality of Indian democracy.”
“The president of the republic and the government of France look forward to meeting and working with the next prime minister and government of India, to bolster relations and carry the strategic partnership between India and France to an ever higher level of trust and cooperation,” said a statement from the president’s office
“India can count on France’s steadfast friendship.”
France was the first country to sign a bilateral civil nuclear agreement with India after the rules of global nuclear commerce were rewritten in September 2006 by making an exception for India, a country which has refused to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) on grounds that it is discriminatory. The India-France relations saw an upsurge under the Manmohan Singh regime, and the Modi government is expected to build on this momentum to expand the canvas of strategic partnership with France and Europe, which is rebounding after a protracted and debilitating financial crisis.
