The Narendra Modi government will present its first General Budget on July 10. The Budget session will be held from July 7 to August 14. The over-month long session of parliament will have 28 sittings.
The Rail Budget will be presented on July 8, while the Economic Survey will be released on July 9. This was decided at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs (CCPA) on June 23.
Bills to replace ordinances, including the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities (Amendment) Ordinance, Polavaram project, the TRAI Act (Amendment) Ordinance and the one on SEBI, will be brought on a priority basis. The ordinances have to be converted into bills before the third week of July.
A new budget has to be put in place before July 31 when the vote-on-account approved by the previous parliament ends. An interim budget for 2014/15 to cover expenditure until a new administration came to power was presented by the previous government on February 17, 2014.
The hike in rail passenger fares and freight rates tops the list of issues that the Opposition is going to bring up before the presentation of rail budget.
The Congress party is seeking the post of Deputy Speaker, even though it lacks the requisite numbers. The party is claiming that it is the single largest party in the opposition benches and its pre poll- alliance UPA has more than adequate numbers to claim the post. Sumita Majajan, speaker of Lok Sabha (upper House) has said that she would take a decision on this issue before the budget session.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu had recently said that the election of Deputy Speaker will take place during Budget Session.
