The suspense is over – the saffron surge has swept India and Modi is the man of the hour. Ending a decade of the UPA regime, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which made development and national resurgence the centrepiece of its campaign, is on course to cross the magical 272 half-way mark in India’s parliamentary polls and looks set to form the next government with Narendra Modi as the prime minister of the world’s most populous democracy.
Latest trends emanating from the ongoing counting of votes in India’s parliamentary elections at (11.30 am, IST) show the BJP leading in around 275 parliamentary constituencies and the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is ahead in over 320 seats. This is the first time in over two decades that a political party in India will get a simple majority in India’s upper House on its own, ensuring a stable and strong national government in the country for the next five years. The decisive majority for the BJP means that the party, unlike the last UPA regime, will not be hostage to blackmail and tantrums by the coalition partners.
The blockbuster victory of the BJP has ended the 10-year-old rule of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance, which was marred by pervasive corruption, misgovernance and the fizzling out of the India Story. “This is not just a victory, it is a big responsibility for us to live up to the expectations of the people,” said BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain.
BJP’s Ravi Shankar Prashad, who is expected to get a plum portfolio in the new government which is expected to be installed next week, called the BJP victory a vote for development and a rejection of the politics of dynasty, inheritance and entitlement.
The Congress, the grand old party of the India, which led the UPA coalition for a decade is leading in less than 60 seats in the 545-member parliament, making it the most dismal performance by the party in its history.
