BJP wins Jharkhand, second largest party in Jammu and Kashmir

The Modi wave seems to have worked again, underlining the surging popularity of India’s prime minister whose development mantra has struck a powerful chord with the electorate. The Bharatiya Janata Party is poised to form the government in Jharkhand, India’s resource-rich eastern state. In Jammu and Kashmir, the BJP looks set to emerge as the second largest government after the PDP, the best performance by the party in the northern state that has been the site of a fierce electoral contest.

After a huge win in the general election in May this year, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also captured political power in Haryana and Maharashtra by winning assembly election convincingly.
In the coming assembly election in states of Jammu & Kashmir and Jharkhand, the BJP is likely to emerge as the single largest party. It may, if not on its own, become the part of the government in alliance with other parties. This may bring its tally to 10 states.

The new Indian government has tightened the belt and asked officials to cut down all the flab and frills, and get down to business. Unveiling an austerity drive, the Indian government underlined that it was aimed at cutting non-plan expenditure by 10% and bring down the fiscal deficit to 4.1% of GDP in 2014-15.
The new guidelines enunciated by India’s finance ministry has barred bureaucrats from travelling first class on overseas visits and asked them to use video conferencing as much as possible. The accent is on doing away with needless frills, with officials barred from holding meetings in 5-star hotels.
