Saudi Arabia has deployed 100 warplanes and 150,000 soldiers and other navy units against Houthi rebels in Yemen.
According to latest reports, the airstrikes destroyed ammunition depots of the Houthi rebels and enabled the Saudi air force to take control of Yemen’s airspace. Some of Houthi’s top leaders, Abdulkhaliq al-Houthi, Yousuf al-Madani, and Yousuf al-Fishi were killed, while the head of the Revolutionary Committee for the Houthis, Mohammed Ali al-Hothi, was wounded.
In a joint statement, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait said they decided to repel Houthi militias, al-Qaeda and ISIS in the country. It further warned that the Houthi group in Yaman posed a “major threat” to the region’s stability.
The coalition has contributed a total of 76 fighter jets; the UAE 30, Kuwaiti 15, Bahrain 15, Qatar 10 and Jordan 6 in the operation.
The campaign has received backing from the US. The White House said, “Washington is coordinating closely with Saudi Arabia and regional allies in the campaign, providing intelligence and logistical support.”
