WASHINGTON: Amid off-and-on dissonant notes about the trajectory of the India-US relationship, the White House has sought to allay sceptics, saying President Barack Obama will continue to enhance the depth of this defining relationship in his second term.
Obama will consider it a success if at the end of his second term the India-US bilateral relationship is even stronger than at present, White House spokesman Jay Carney said at a media briefing in the US capital Jan 31.
“The President’s views have not changed, both on the importance and value of the Indian American community and the importance and value of the bilateral relationship that we have developed with India,” Carney said.
“India is an incredibly important country in the world, not just in the region, and the President looks forward to continuing to enhance the depth of our relationship to work together on common goals in the region and around the world.”
“And I think you can expect in his second term that he will consider it a success if at the end of his second term that bilateral relationship is stronger even than it is today,” Carney said.
Obama has famously described the India-US ties as “one of the defining partnerships of the 21st century.” The president, an admirer of Indian culture and cuisine, has packed his administration with more Indian-Americans in high places than any other previous president. A majority of the 3-million strong Indian-American community backed Obama during the November presidential poll.
The India-US nuclear deal, struck in 2005 and sealed in 2009, transformed the India-US relations and pitched the engagement into a higher trajectory. Since then, the relations have blossomed in virtually all fields, ranging from trade and investment and energy to defence, security and counter-terrorism.
