Nearly a month after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Barack Obama held their maiden summit in Washington, India and the US will be looking to bolster their military ties during a meeting of the high-profile Defence Policy Group.
India’s Defence Secretary R.K. Mathur left for the US October 27 on a five-day visit that is aimed at fleshing out the details of a revised 2005 Framework for the US-India Defence Relationship which the two sides plan to renew for another 10 years.
The September 30 meeting between the leaders of the world’s oldest and largest democracies saw the firming up of a new template of defence partnership that will focus on co-development and co-production. The joint statement comprises many significant initiatives to reinvigorate the Political-Military Dialogue and the US offer of assistance in setting up India’s planned National Defence University.
The meeting of the Defence Policy Group, however, comes days after India chose to purchase 8,356 Spike anti-tank guided missiles and 321 launchers from Israel for around 540 million USD. The Israeli system was chosen over the US offer of Javelin missiles for which the US had vigorously lobbied.
