Germany joins war against IS

Joining the other major powers of the world, Germany has agreed to enter into the fight against the Islamic State (IS). Germany’s lower house of Parliament on December 4 approved the government’s plans to join the military campaign against the IS in Syria.

The parliament supported the government proposal overwhelingly, where out of the 598 lawmakers who took part in the vote, 445 voted for, 146 against and seven abstained.

According to various reports, the mission will include sending six Tornado reconnaissance jets, a frigate to help protect the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, refuelling aircraft and up to 1,200 military personnel. Germany will, however, not join countries like Britain, France, the United States and Russia in conducting airstrikes.

The coalition’s strikes, however, have failed to dislodge the fighters from the occupied territories in Syria and Iraq where they have proclaimed a state.
