Signaling a muscular approach towards combating terrorism, Pakistan has sentenced 11 terrorists to death. Pakistan’s commitment to combat terror has been questioned in recent times by the international community. According to the military’s media wing Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the terrorists had been convicted of offences which include the killing and kidnapping civilians, attacks on the Armed Forces and destruction of schools and communications infrastructure.
The convicted terrorists were affiliated to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a terrorist outfit which has its headquarters in North Waziristan. Thousands of TTP fighters have either been eliminated, arrested or injured by Pakistan Army through its counter-terror operation ‘Zarb-e-Azb’.
As per the details released on each of 11 convicts, Muhammad Umar was an active TTP member involved in attacking Armed Forces of Pakistan that resulted in the death of soldiers and injuries to police officials. He was also involved in making of explosives. Umar had admitted his offences before the Magistrate and the trial court. He was tried on three charges and awarded death sentence.
The terrorists were involved in attacking Law Enforcement Agencies which resulted in deaths of Senior Superintendent of Police Muhammad Hilal Khan, Colonel Mustafa Jamal and Captain Ishfaq. The 11 terrorists were also in possession of fire arms and explosives.
