Russian President Vladimir Putin, the architect of the modern strategic partnership between India and Russia, has struck an upbeat note that he will work with India’s prime minister-designate Narendra Modi to take bilateral ties to new heights.
In his felicitation message to Modi, the long-time Russian leader alluded to the signing of the “historic” Declaration of Strategic Partnership when the BJP-led NDA government was in power in 2000.
Putin expressed confidence that together with Mr. Modi they “will be able to multiply the achievements of the past period,” said Kremlin in a statement.
Putin “highly praised the traditionally friendly relations between Russia and India that are based on the Declaration of Strategic Partnership, which was signed when BJP was in power and which defined the course of bilateral cooperation for years ahead,” said the Kremlin in a statement.
The last 14 years have seen a steady upswing in the multi-faceted India-Russia ties, with Moscow becoming an active partner in realising India’s civil nuclear energy aspirations.
In his message, the Russian president underlined that that the 200 Declaration had “historic significance,” and pointed out that it was borne out by “the impressive results of productive joint work” since its signing in 2000 and “large-scale mutually beneficial projects accomplished in the economic, military-technical, scientific, cultural and humanitarian spheres.”
Putin’s upbeat note on India ties come at a time when the Russian leader is facing the wrath of the West for the alleged annexation of Crimea and is increasingly looking to deepen economic and energy ties with emerging Asian powers like India and China.
Looking ahead, Russian ambassador to India Alexander Kadakin said he did not foresee any major changes in India-Russia friendship and glowingly described India as a super power in the making. In an interview, the Russian envoy said: “As far as Russia-India friendship and strategic partnership go, we do not know foresee and don’t expect any policy change whatsoever. We shall march ahead. This relationship is deep-rooted in a broad national consensus in the two countries.”
He also pointed out that bilateral ties had blossomed during the previous tenure of the BJP-led NDA (1999-2004). “We have had an exceptionally productive experience of cooperating with the party coming to power – the BJP. And it was during BJP previous winning that the historic declaration on strategic partnership with Russia was signed by president Putin and ex-prime minister Vajpayee.”
