Indian celebrity sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has done India proud once more. His signature work, “Save Tree, Save the Future,” has won the People’s Choice prize at the World Cup of Sand Sculpting-2014 held in the Atlantic City, United States.
Pattnaik is known for carving sand sculptures to highlight current issues and to create social awareness. He had previously created sand sculptures dedicated to anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela, and also raised awareness about World AIDS Day through his works. “I am very happy to win this prize for our country in first sand art world cup at USA 2014 and thankful to all the people who liked my sculpture and voted for me,” he said.
Day-Dreaming and Art
Pattnaik, who awarded with the Padma Shri, one of India’s top civilian honour, in 2014, has participated in over 50 international championships and festivals around the world and has won many prizes and accolades.
Growing up in Odhisa, he started sculpting images on sand at the age of 12. Pattnaik’s life story shows the power of self-fashioning: acute poverty could have parched his spirits, and prevented him from completing his primary education, but the intrepid dreamer spent time on the beach giving full play to his imagination, and self-learning the ancient sand art.
