Iraq update: Indian nurses, the abducted are safe

The ordeal of the 46 Indian nurses trapped in in a building in Iraq’s violence-torn Tikrit town shows no sign of ending, but the redeeming news is that all of them are “safe and unharmed.”

Updating journalists on the plight of Indians stranded in Iraq, including the trapped nurses and 39 kidnapped Indians, Syed Akbaruddin, the spokesperson of India’s external affairs ministry, said July 2 that India’s ambassador (in Iraq) has spoken to them. “They are unharmed, safe,” he said. The 39 Indians held in captivity in Mosul, too, were safe, said the spokesperson.

The spokesperson added that the “facilitation phase” to help Indian nationals wanting to return from Iraq was proceeding “satisfactorily”.

The Indian government is working virtually 24×7 and is knocking all doors to ensure that the Indians marooned in the conflict-torn areas are rescued and return home safely. The government has launched a multi-pronged evacuation plan to get most of 10,000 Indians living and working in the oil-rich Gulf state back home
