In the wake of recent events where China has been at loggerheads with many countries in the Asia-Pacific region, reports in the state-run Chinese media have advised Asia’s largest economy to curb geopolitical competition with neighbouring countries, especially India and Russia. This comes in the backdrop of China’s growing assertion in the Indian Ocean Region and India forging alliances with the US and Japan to enhance maritime security in the region.
“If China wants the BRICS to continue to deepen their ties, it should seek to act as a guiding hand, adopting an approach that is more prudent than pushy,” said an article in the state-run Global Times. The recent launch of the New Development Bank (NDB) by BRICS countries while being welcomed by and large has also raised some concerns about China’s intention to dominate the global financial system despite the other member countries having an equal say on paper at least.
China has been advised to advocate an inclusive global policy agenda that would bridge the gap between the developed and developing world, and to check its geopolitical competition with Russia and India. India and Russia are also members of SCO along with China and considering that the three countries partner in different multilateralgroupings, the geopolitical tensions between China and the two countries have not been resolved to the extent one would have hoped for.
Given that India and China are the two fastest growing economies and are also seen as competitors, it is essential that in the new diversifying global financial system, cooperation between both countries can go a long way in easing the rising geopolitical tensions in the region.
