The countdown has begun for the much-awaited LSR Model UN Conference 2024. The conference will take place on April 5 and 6 at the Lady Shri Ram College for Women, in the heart of New Delhi. The buzz about the event is growing louder as hundreds of students wait for two days of dialogue, diplomacy, and empowerment under the theme, “Making it Matter.”
The conference promises to be a convergence of young talented minds, with an array of committees addressing pressing global issues. From the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW) to the All India Political Parties Meet (AIPPM), delegates will engage in substantive discussions on topics ranging from gender equality to universal access to clean water and sanitation.
Model United Nations Conferences have transcended their origins as a niche educational activity to become a global phenomenon, captivating young minds with diplomacy, debate, and critical thinking. In India, the MUN fever has caught on, mirroring its global ascent. A study conducted by the National Collegiate Conference Association found that over 80% of MUN participants reported improvements in their public speaking skills, critical thinking abilities, and understanding of global affairs. The LSRMUN society has established a reputable position within the Indian MUN circuit.
Adding to the allure of the event are the distinguished guests who will grace the occasion with their insights and expertise. On April 5, UN Resident Coordinator in India Shombi Sharp will deliver a keynote address on “Deliberating Impact: Mitigation of Forced Displacement on Vulnerable Populations”. Sharp’s wealth of experience in humanitarian affairs promises to shed light on one of the most pressing challenges facing the global community today.
Continuing the momentum on April 6, Ambassador Lakshmi Puri, former Assistant Secretary-General at the United Nations and the former deputy executive director of UN Women, will take the stage to share her insights on “Making Women Matter: Indian and Global Perspectives”. With over four decades of experience in international diplomacy and women’s empowerment, Ambassador Puri’s presence will inspire delegates to advocate for gender equality and women’s rights on both local and global platforms.
The landscape of Indian youth engagement in international relations and diplomacy is evolving rapidly. The recent ORF Foreign Policy Survey highlights a resounding 83% approval rating for India’s foreign policy among the youth, signalling a keen interest in global affairs and multilateralism. LSRMUN, with its ethos rooted in fostering understanding and engagement with international diplomacy, serves as a crucial platform for India’s youth to delve into the intricacies of global politics through the lens of the United Nations framework.
What distinguishes LSRMUN is its unwavering commitment to inclusivity and excellence. With a membership exceeding 1200 participants and seven core teams, the society boasts a rich legacy of collaboration with esteemed organizations such as CRY, UNHCR, and UNODC. LSRMUN’s four pillars – accessibility, bilingualism, the NGO Committee, and its academic research journal – epitomize its dedication to fostering a meaningful MUN experience.
At its core, LSRMUN Society is more than just a platform for debate – it is a community of changemakers united by a shared vision of a more inclusive and equitable world. As the conference unfolds, delegates will not only hone their diplomatic skills but also forge lasting connections and embark on a journey towards effecting positive change in their communities and beyond.
In a world grappling with complex foreign policy challenges, LSRMUN stands as a beacon of hope, nurturing the next generation of Indian leaders to tackle the pressing issues of our time. As delegates gather to deliberate, collaborate, and innovate, they embody the spirit of “Making it Matter” – a testament to the enduring impact of diplomacy and dialogue in shaping a better tomorrow.
