Kazan Spirit: India, China SRs to hold talks in Beijing

Building on the understanding forged between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in the Russian city of Kazan, Special Representatives of India and China will hold talks in Beijing on December 18 to address issues connected to the decades-old boundary question.

India’s Special Representative, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, will hold talks with a Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China’s Central Committee and Foreign Affairs Minister, in Beijing. The two SRs will discuss the management of peace and tranquility in the border areas and explore a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable solution to the boundary question, said India’s Ministry of External Affairs in a statement while announcing the SR talks.

The bilateral meeting between PM Modi and President Xi on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan on October 23  led to the resumption of dialogue between the two Asian giants as the two leaders endorsed the border patrolling agreement and unveiled new steps to improve bilateral ties which came under enormous stress after the Galwan killings in the summer of 2020.

The meeting culminated in a roadmap for resuming dialogue, which includes a meeting between Special Representatives of India and China and the revival of foreign minister-level talks. In their talks, the two leaders had had stressed on the critical role  of the Special Representatives in the resolution of the boundary question and for the maintenance of peace and tranquility in the border areas. The last meeting between SRs was held in December 2019.
